Arsonist escapes jail term

A man who allegedly set himself on fire in front of a house, then torched it before escaping prison has been sentenced to two years in jail.

John Thomas, 28, was also ordered to perform 60 hours of community service.

In February last year, Thomas, from Bristol, was caught stealing from a petrol station on a London street.

Judge Richard Durness of Nottingham Crown Court said after Thomas spent time in prison, his actions were like those of a criminal who had a long-term relationship with the victim, but had been allowed to continue destroying the property of other people.

He said: "It is clear that you had no regard for the victims or the family involved, but the circumstances of your offending put you at large, and that is why you are today sentenced to a prison term in connection with the arson at your house."

The judge said it would be right for Thomas to be released on licence once he had served a term for the same offence.

However, he said his conduct would have been more likely if he had been caught.

He added: "It is clear from the evidence and from your actions that you have not yet grown up as a person or matured in society.
